Julia Sweeney: Letting Go of God

Comedian and playwright Julia Sweeney performs the first 15 minutes of her 2006 solo show Letting Go of God. It begins on the morning of her seventh birthday, when Julia learns from her Catholic parents that she has reached the age of reason, capable of being judged by God. That morning she also learns another great truth, equally devastating. This sets the stage for Sweeney’s freewheeling, conversational examination of her own faith.

Who is Julia Sweeney?

Known for her four-year run on Saturday Night Live and her powerful solo shows, Julia Sweeney is carving out her own territory in entertainment, one that moves between the personal and the political, the controversial and the comical.

You said that your road to becoming a non-beleiver began when two morman missionaries came to your door; then you said that two more showed up to your door again years later after your transformation. I just wanted to ask you the question, did you ever accept the challenge to read the Book of Morman? Did you ever decide for yourself whether or not ‘that book’ could have been written by a teenager with no formal education. By the sound of your lectures, its obvious that you’ve read quite a bit about everything else. Why don’t you take some of that reading time and devote it to proving the Book Of Morman wrong, just as you’ve attempted to prove God as non-existant. Two times, the Morman missionaries have shown up at your doorstep; just a coincidence eh? I don’t think so. Everything about you and your quest to confirm your beliefs based on the read and studied facts tell me that you can’t turn away from this challenge. Read the Book of Morman.
