MIT Stata Center sues architect Frank Gehry

Tuesday, November 6th, 2007

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology is suing renowned architect Frank Gehry, alleging serious design flaws in the $300 million Stata Center.

The school asserts that the center, completed in spring 2004, has persistent leaks, drainage problems and mold growing on its brick exterior. It says accumulations of snow and ice have fallen dangerously from window boxes and other areas of its roofs, blocking emergency exits and causing damage.

The suit says MIT paid Los Angeles-based Gehry Partners $15 million to design the Stata Center, which cost $300 million to build. It houses labs, offices, classrooms and meeting rooms.

“Gehry breached its duties by providing deficient design services and drawings,” according to the suit, which also names New Jersey-based Beacon Skanska Construction Co., now known as Skanska USA Building Inc. The suit, filed Oct. 31, seeks unspecified damages.

An executive at Skanska’s Boston office said Gehry ignored warnings from Skanska and a consulting company before construction that there were flaws in the design. “This is not a construction issue, never has been,” said Paul Hewins, executive vice president and area general manager of Skanska USA.

Who is Frank Gehry?

Frank Owen Gehry (1929) is a Pritzker Prize winning architect based in Los Angeles, California.

His best known works include the titanium-covered Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain, Walt Disney Concert Hall in downtown Los Angeles, Dancing House in Prague, Czech Republic, and his private residence in Santa Monica, California, which jump-started his career, lifting it from the status of “paper architecture” before receiving major commissions in later years.

Interactive LED Coffee Table

What’s an interactive LED coffee table? It’s a coffee table that has hundreds of light-emitting diodes (LED) in the top surface that respond to motion above the table.

The LEDs are only activated when they see motion. Without motion it calms down to a very slight attractive twinkling. The entire table pulls a total of 35 watts when it is fully active. That’s less than a single common household light bulb!

Using a network of 32 active and passive near-infrared optical sensors, it detects motion above the table and changes in ambient light. Made of fully analog circuits, the light patterns sweep outwards from your motion with perfect fades, glowing stronger the closer the movement is, rippling across a pool of 480 super-bright white LEDs. It works in full sunlight or total darkness.

Speed Camera Woodpecker

Tuesday, September 25th, 2007

The Speed Camera Woodpecker is Max Magnus Norman’s new creative sculpture/display art.

The Speed Camera Woodpecker is a bird which enjoys pecking on speed cameras pole. The artist picked very right pole in my opinion. It will definitely get attention from passing motorists. Don’t forget to check out other art work by Max Norman.

Who is Max Magnus Norman?

Max Magnus Norman (b.1973) makes his own path in the world of art.
Sometimes when - if - you meditate or right before you fall asleep you might have seen clear pictures or scenes flash by in front of you eyes. What you see when you look at Max Magnus Norman’s art is that kind of visions. Norman paints or sculpts the images he sees before him in the same manner as a scientist; without additions or subtractions. The result is a very personal art, at the same time it is not uncommon that astonished exhibition visitors recognize details from their own dreams in the paintings.

Max Magnus Norman covers several creative fields. Besides being an acclaimed painter and sculptor he is also the creator behind the highly popular computer game Abashera, a game in which the player wanders through a convincing three dimensional world solving a multitude of clever puzzles and riddles.

Great Cars are Art

Video: Chris Bangle: Great cars are Art

American designer Chris Bangle explains his philosophy that car design is an art form in its own right, with an engaging account of the BMW Group’s Deep Blue project, intended to create the SUV of the future. Sending a team of German designers to live in the US and research the future of the SUV seemed like a good idea at the time.

Car design is a ubiquitous but often overlooked art form. As chief of design for the BMW Group, Chris Bangle has overseen cars that have been seen the world over, including BMW 7 Series and the Z4 roadster.

Theo Jensen Strandbeest Kinetic Sculptures

Video: Theo Jensen Strandbeest.

Dutch artist Theo Jansen demonstrates his amazingly lifelike kinetic sculptures, built from plastic tubes, old lemonade bottles, and plastic ties. His “Strandbeests” (Beach Creatures) are built to move and even survive on their own.

His newest creatures walk without assistance on the beaches of Holland, powered by wind, captured by gossamer wings that flap and pump air into old lemonade bottles that in turn power the creatures’ many plastic spindly legs. The walking sculptures look alive as they move, each leg articulating in such a way that the body is steady and level. They even incorporate primitive logic gates that are used to reverse the machine’s direction if it senses dangerous water or loose sand where it might get stuck.
