San Diego Chargers consider traveling to Arizona

Monday, October 22nd, 2007

With the San Diego County’s wildfires making air quality in San Diego potentially hazardous, the Chargers are making plans to travel to Arizona tomorrow to continue preparations for their next game.

Next game schedule: Sunday, October 28 at 1:05 pm.
Visiting Team: Houston Texans

A final decision on whether to go to Arizona is expected later today. The Cardinals do not have a game this weekend, but it isn’t known whether the San Diego Chargers are considering moving Sunday’s scheduled home game with Houston to Arizona. Qualcomm Stadium is being used as an evacuation center.

The Chargers were set to resume practice today following BYE weekend off, but after a meeting with coach Norv Turner this morning, the workout was canceled and players were sent home.

The fires burning around the county are nowhere near the team’s Murphy Canyon com plex, but there is smoke in the air and many players and coaches live in areas that have been evacuated. The players al ready were scheduled to be off tomorrow.

“There’s nothing we could do today,” coach Norv Turner said.”We have a dozen guys who have evacuated their houses and have stuff they’ve got to deal with.”

Among those who live in the Poway and Rancho Bernardo area are LaDainian Tomlinson, Shawne Merriman, Shaun Phillips and Luis Castillo. Castillo, who lives in Poway, returned to his home shortly before 10 a.m. and resumed packing in the event he had to leave. “Most of the guys who live around here have been evacuated,” Castillo said as he watched and felt the air get smokier seemingly by the minute.”It’s not looking good.”

Said Turner:”We’ll just see what happens. The air quality is only getting worse.”

It was four years ago this week that fires in San Diego County forced the Chargers to switch a Monday night home game to Tempe, Ariz.

San Diego California Fire Kills 1 Injures 17

Monday, October 22nd, 2007

South San Diego County, California Fire Kills 1 Injures 17 others including 4 fifighters hospitalized in serious condition.

A strong wind-whipped wildfire that erupted in rural southern San Diego County on Sunday had burned more than 20,000 acres and killed one person and injured 17 others, including four firefighters hospitalized in serious condition. The fire was being driven by Santa Ana winds of 30 to 35 mph, with occasional stronger gusts.

The communities of Potrero, Tecate, Dulzura and parts of Deerhorn Valley were evacuated, according to Cal Fire, the state agency that protects backcountry areas of San Diego County. Ground crews focused on evacuating residents rather than protecting property due to the speed of the blaze. The fire was burning along two fronts to the northwest, with the southern “head” burning past Barrett Lake Road south of Highway 94 and the northern flank moving toward Mother Grundy Peak.

Authorities had not identified the person who perished in the blaze or the circumstances or location of the death by late evening. Twelve other civilians were burned, but officials did not elaborate or provide condition reports.

“With all of the burn injuries to civilians, this indicates how extremely dangerous these fires can be,” Cal Fire’s Roxanne Provaznik said.

“Residents are strongly advised to follow evacuation orders given by law enforcement.”

The four firefighters were airlifted to the UC San Diego Burn Center. According to a Cal Fire dispatcher, the firefighters’ injuries, while serious, did not appear to be life-threatening.

Authorities said the firefighters were trapped in a so-called “burn-over,” or when a fire sweeps over them or their vehicles. They were overcome by towering flames that shot over their heads, apparently while defending a structure —- similar to what happened last October when five firefighters were killed in the Esperanza wildfire in Riverside County.

Displaced residents flocked to a Spring Valley high school set up as an evacuation center in the afternoon, all desperate for information about the fire.

Simi Valley, California Tire Pros. Shooting

Four victims were shot in Tire Pros Shop at Simi Valley strip mall Tuesday morning, and at least two of the victims died of their wounds.

Police said a gunman fatally shot a customer sitting in a chair outside a Tire Pros shop in a strip mall at about 7:30 a.m. 4386 E. East Los Angeles Avenue and Tapo Street in Simi Valley, CA 93063

He then entered the store and shot the owner in the arm and an employee in the stomach. Police believe the gunman then took his own life. Witnessed said another employee escaped and ran for help.

“It was a very chaotic situation when the officers first arrived, so they were trying to establish if there was an outstanding shooter, if there were any other people who were inured or jeopardy,” Sgt. David Livingstone of Simi Valley police.

The owner and employee were hospitalized and expected to survive the shooting. A 20-year-old man was in critical condition and a 37-year-old man was in fair condition at Simi Valley Hospital. One of the wounded was shot in the arm and another in the abdomen.

Damian Cervantes, 29, an employee of the tire store, said he had just arrived for work and was walking toward the garage when he saw several police officers with their guns drawn.

“I was very scared,” he said. “I’ve never seen something like this.”

A body lay inside the store, while the other was still sitting in a chair in an outside waiting area covered in a yellow tarp. Cervantes said he believed one of the dead was a female customer.

Livingstone said police are still investigating the shooting, but they have ruled out a robbery connection. Police are unsure if the gunman ever worked for the store.

Simi Valley, 35 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles, is a city of 100,000 that is often classified as one of the safest cities for its size in America, based on reports of violent and serious crimes. The Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum is located in Simi Valley.

  • China banned cosmetic surgery, talent show

    Tuesday, October 2nd, 2007

China has banned television and radio ads for push-up bras, figure-enhancing underwear and sex toys in the communist government’s latest move to purge the nation’s airwaves of what it calls social pollution.

Regulators have already targeted ads using crude or suggestive language, behavior, and images, tightening their grip on television and radio a few weeks ahead of a twice-a-decade Communist Party congress at which some new senior leaders will be appointed.

The latest move by the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television, or SARFT, also bans advertisements for sexual aids such as tonics that claim to boost performance in bed.

Illegal ’sexual medication’ advertisements and other harmful ads pose a grave threat to society,” said the SARFT notice, issued in the past week and posted on the administration’s Web site.

“They not only seriously mislead consumers, harm the people’s health, pollute the social environment, and corrupt social mores, but also directly harm the credibility of public broadcasting and affect the image of the Communist Party and the government,” the notice said.

China has already also issued strict rules for TV talent shows, including the banning of “American Idol”-style mass audience voting by mobile phone text message or the Internet.

Regulators have also banned television shows about cosmetic surgery and sex changes, and a talent show that they deemed coarse.

    North Korea Nuke for DVDs?

    Tuesday, October 2nd, 2007

North Korea’s leader Kim Jong-Il is a big fan of popular South Korean actress Lee Young-Ae and he will receive DVDs of her hit dramas and films as gifts at an upcoming summit, a report said Saturday.

“Chairman Kim likes to watch South Korean TV programmes. Among South Korean entertainers, he favours Lee Young-Ae the most,” an unidentified South Korean official was quoted as saying by the JoongAng daily.

“DVDs of South Korean movies and dramas, including those featuring Lee Young-Ae, will be included as summit gifts,” the official said.

Lee, 36, has a large fan base in Asia. She starred in Dae Jang Geum, a popular TV drama that played a key role in the advent of the Korean Wave, a surge of South Korean pop culture in the region.

Aside from DVDs, South Korea is mulling a cutting-edge home theatre system and DVD players as gifts for Kim, a movie fanatic, who will hold a summit with South Korean President Roh Moo-Hyun in Pyongyang on October 2-4, officials here said.

Kim Jong-Il is said to have a collection of more than 20,000 foreign films in his private library and has reportedly produced several films himself, mostly depicting revolutionary heroes.

His obsession with developing North Korea’s film industry was so great that in 1978 he reportedly ordered North Korean agents to abduct a famous South Korean movie director, Shin Sang-Ok, and his ex-wife, actress Che Eun Hui.

    Unclaimed Baggage and Lost Baggage

During the first six months of this year, the U.S. carriers reporting flight delay and mishandled baggage data posted a mishandled baggage rate of 7.34 reports per 1,000 passengers, up from the 5.86 mishandled baggage rate recorded during January-June 2006.

More than 1 million pieces of luggage were lost, damaged, delayed or pilfered by U.S. airlines from May to July, according to data from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS)

2007 Bureau of Transportation Statistic report

Airline companies say they do their best to get items that are lost, left on board (LOB) and unclaimed to their owners. But after 60 to 90 days they’re sent to a salvage company.

Unclaimed Baggage Center in Scottsboro, Alabama is one of them. It’s the warehouse of the lost and unclaimed baggage from airlines, cruise ships and train companies.

Founded in 1970 by Doyle and Sue Owens as a part-time business, it soon became a full-time venture. In 1978, the Owens incorporated the company and watched it prosper as one of the great ‘hidden’ bargain centers for savvy shoppers.

Unclaimed Baggage Center’s warehouse occupies more than a city block. Over one million items pass through the store annually. This place is known as “better than eBay.com” It attracts bargain hunters from around the world.
